Seasoned cruisers are accustomed to having meals, entertainment and transportation built into the price of their vacation, but the land portion can work differently.
Depending on the cruise line and cruisetour, sightseeing, park tours, meals and optional activities, or excursions, may or may not be included. Even within the same cruiseline, two cruisetours with similar advertised prices can have different inclusions and very different total vacation costs when we look at the cost of the whole trip. This sounds basic, but sometimes excitement, expectations and the reality of what a trip feels like don’t always line up. This is where our first hand experience makes a huge difference. Worth it is a relative term that means different things to different people. An Alaskan cruisetour is an incredible way to see Alaska, but Alaska is quite large. Worth comparing when: Denali depth, destination-focused touring and the possibility of traveling into the Yukon are priorities. Holland America also has a long-established Alaska land program with opportunities to combine cruising with Denali and, on select itineraries, Canada’s Yukon Territory.
Some itineraries spend substantially more time inland than others, which can be wonderful for travelers who want the land journey to be a major part of the vacation. But, it can also mean a longer and more structured trip. We look at the amount of time at Denali, overall cruisetour routing, Yukon travel, transportation and your ideal touring style before deciding whether the additional distance adds value for your family.
Royal Caribbean Alaska Cruisetours
Worth comparing when: Your family is “loyal to Royal” (if you sail Royal Caribbean, you know!) or if your family values the ship experience as much as the land experience. Royal Caribbean combines a seven-night Alaska cruise with a multi-night journey into Alaska’s interior, with select programs including destinations such as Denali, Anchorage, Talkeetna and Fairbanks.
For many families, Royal Caribbean belongs on the shortlist for their Alaska cruisetour because children and teenagers may place significant value on the ship itself. We are seeing an increase in trends for grandparents taking their adult children and grandchildren on multi-generational Alaskan cruises.
Royal Caribbean’s current Alaska cruisetour options add between 2 and 6 nights on land to a seven-night cruise and include guided land transportation and lodging.
But we still have to look closely at the land portion, a child who loves every minute of the ship may feel very differently about a long rail or motorcoach day through Interior Alaska. As Moms, we know what bored and fidgety kids on a vacation looks like, and We want both land and sea components of the vacation to work for your family.
Mom Approved insight: We are seeing many grandparents or parents wanting their families to experience Alaska with them and sometimes we may suggest planning the cruisetour for grandparents and then coordinating the younger families or your adult children who are unable to commit to a longer Alaskan vacation to the cruise only portion so you can have the multi-generational family time AND time with your partner or friends to explore your Alaska interior bucket list together before or after the big family sailing.
Celebrity Alaska Cruisetours
Worth comparing when: You love Celebrity’s incredible onboard experience and want to pair it with a guided journey into the interior of Alaska.
Celebrity’s Alaska cruisetours can add between 2 and 6 nights on land and include Denali along with destinations such as Anchorage, Talkeetna and Fairbanks, depending on the itinerary. Celebrity’s current cruisetour programs overnight at Denali and include an experience inside Denali National Park.
This can be particularly appealing to couples, families with older children and multigenerational travelers who prefer the Celebrity at sea experience, but do not want their Alaska experience to end at the coastline.
Norwegian Alaska Cruisetours
Worth comparing when: Norwegian’s cruise experience fits your family and you want an escorted inland program. Norwegian currently offers several different Alaska cruisetour combinations, including programs incorporating Fairbanks, Denali, Anchorage, Alyeska and scenic travel aboard the Alaska Railroad. Some of its current itineraries are fully escorted by a local guide.
The amount of time at Denali and the land experiences included vary considerably between programs, so we take the time to compare for you family because the itinerary matters when curating a cruisetour experience.

The cruise line you sail with for Alaska is only one aspect of the decision, here are some of the other things we look at with our MAT client families before they book their Alaskan cruisetour vacation.
The Alaska Cruise Itinerary
Denali is on a lot of bucket lists. It is a big deal for many families, but we are not going to ignore the cruise experience because you are looking forward to seeing Denali in its glory!
Did you know only 30% of Alaskan visitors will be able to see Denali due to needing the weather to cooperate both where you are viewing from and the mountain’s microclimate!
This is why if Denali is VERY important to you, we have cruisetours we may prioritize that maximize your time in Denali or offer excursions that will give you the best chances of viewing Denali.
Considerations should go beyond Denali, but include:
Which glaciers will you see?
What ports are included?
What are the port times?
Which ship is operating the sailing?
The strongest land program does not automatically compensate for a cruise itinerary that does not fit what you came to Alaska to experience!
How Much Time You Actually Have in Denali
Seeing Denali printed on an itinerary will tell you very little. You will want to know:
- How many nights you spend there
- What time you arrive
- What time you leave
- What park touring is included
- How much independent time remains
A one night stop and a two or three night Denali stay can create very different vacation experiences.
We don’t count how many destinations appear on the itinerary, but look at how much vacation value and ensure the experience aligns with what you are actually going to experience.
How Much of Your Vacation Is Transportation
Rail travel through Alaska can be one of the highlights of the trip, but some of these incredible Alaskan destinations are quite a distance apart, and you still have to have transportation between. Rail is one of the transportation options, but so is a motorcoach.
A longer itinerary is not automatically a richer itinerary if the additional days are primarily spent getting from one destination to another. One question we repeatedly look at is: Are the additional days adding experiences or simply adding movement as filler?
What Is Included
Depending on the cruisetour, your land program may include:
- Transportation – could be rail, motorcoach or both
- Accommodations – room categories vary and some can be upgraded
- Selected sightseeing – some curated activities and excursions could be included, with options to add additional excursions for an extra cost
- A Denali park tour – there are 2 main tours, one goes much deeper into the park than the other
- A Tour Director or guide – some will keep the same guide for you, others may change guides as you travel
- Certain meals, but not usually all – some cruisetours can upgrade to a more inclusive plan
- Luggage handling – this can be tricky but most cruisetours will cover this
Other experiences may cost extra, like additional excursions during free time at a lodge to do helicopter tours, whale watching, fishing, dogsled experiences etc. Your Mom Approved Travel Advisor looks at the actual inclusions before comparing prices, and guides you to help budget for additional expenses.
Meals on the Land Portion
This aspect of cruisetours is the thing that surprises many first-time cruisetour travelers. Land meals are not normally fully included the same way your meals are onboard the ship.
For example, Princess states that meals at its railcars, wilderness lodges and other land hotels are generally at the traveler’s expense unless the itinerary says otherwise, and prepaid land meal packages are available on eligible cruisetours.

Cruise First or Land First
Many Alaska cruisetours operate in one direction with the land portion before the cruise and in the opposite direction with land afterward, but neither is automatically better. We do have recommendations we make, but its based on the experience you want, flight pricing and how your family vacations.
Some families love completing the more active land portion first and then unpacking onboard and relaxing. Other families prefer starting with the cruise and ending with the land portion. Flights, itinerary flow and your family’s energy level all matter when determining what is best for you!
Royal Caribbean, for example, currently offers both pre- and post-cruise Alaska cruisetours depending on the direction of the sailing.
We look at the entire journey from your flight to Alaska through the flight home.
How Many Days Do You Need for an Alaska Cruisetour?
For many families, approximately 10 to 14 nights provides enough time to combine a cruise with a meaningful land experience, but that does not make 10–14 nights right for everyone.
Approximately 9 or 10 Nights
Shorter cruisetours can work when vacation time is limited, but compressing hotels, transportation and sightseeing into fewer days can create a faster pace, and feel a bit rushed.
Approximately 11 to 14 Nights
For many families, this range gives us more flexibility to balance cruising and Interior Alaska without creating an exceptionally long vacation.
15 Nights or Longer
Longer cruisetours can include more time at Denali, additional Interior Alaska destinations or travel into the Yukon. These are extraordinary trips for the right travelers.
Even then, we still evaluate: What are those extra days buying you? We would rather recommend 12 excellent days for your family than 17 exhausting ones.
Are Alaska Cruisetours Good for Kids?
Alaska cruisetours can be excellent for older children and teenagers who are excited about Alaska itself. There is an awe and sense of wonder in these ages like no other. Depending on the ages, they may be learning about many of these iconic Alaskan treasures in school which makes it relevant to them.
- Wildlife – Alaska’s big five are popular with most ages: bears, moose, caribou, dall sheep and wolf when coupled with a cruise for whales and incredible marine life can make for incredible memories!
- Trains – iconic dome trains are a great way to see the Alaska wilderness and get a taste of train transportation
- Glaciers – the science and beauty can make a lasting impression on the kids
- National parks – there are many programs incorporated into Alaskan cruises and Cruisetours that explore some of Alaska’s National parks including the Junior Ranger program- and there are fun badges to collect along the way!
- Sled dogs – from puppy experiences to watching the adult working dogs do their thing, you are bound to captivate, and maybe even inspire the kids!
- Mountains – with opportunities to connect science class, beauty and outdoor fun the mountains are good for all ages
- Outdoor adventures – its not hard to pull the kids away from their devices with all of the adventure available on a cruise tour
But we do take into consideration the ages of the kids, demeanor, special interests and travel stamina.
- a twelve year old who is fascinated by wildlife may happily spend hours watching for moose
- a mature seven year old might really enjoy looking for Santa’s “reindeer” on your tour of Denali.
- a feisty four year old may be completely finished with Alaska halfway through a long motorcoach day.

- Transportation time
- Number of hotel changes
- Early departures, time changes, circadian rythyms and sleep schedules

- Time to relax – downtime for Uno by a fire

- Parents may be excited about glaciers and wildlife, and relieved not to coordinate every transportation segment themselves.
- Kids and teens may be dreaming about whales, sled dogs and outdoor adventures.
Cruisetours can remove a tremendous amount of logistical work from a complicated family vacation, but they also create important planning questions, and many of these are similiar to family or adult onlt questions. Some of the things to consider:
- Mobility concerns – with a wide range in ages, you may have a wide range of mobility from stroller concerns to stairs
- Walking distances – little legs. teen legs and older legs have different tolerances for distance
- Accessibility – neurological, physical, mental accessibility all matter when looking at a larger group
- Length of transportation days
- Room requirements and sleeping arrangements
- Cruise cabin locations and proximity to each other
- Desired activity levels can vary widely with young children to grandparents
- Dining needs and preferences
- Amount of downtime
- Which experiences everyone wants to share, and which experiences some may want to do separately
Everyone Does Not Need to Do Everything
Grandpa and the teens may want to go flightseeing, while Grandma, Mom and younger kids may prefer a scenic afternoon around the lodge.
Teenagers may choose something active while grandparents opt for wildlife viewing.
Good multigenerational planning creates the Alaska experiences everyone will remember together without requiring everyone to travel identically every minute.

2028 Alaska land-and-sea planning is already underway for most cruiselines, although release schedules vary by cruise line.
Princess has released 2028 Alaska cruising and cruisetours.
Norwegian has also announced its summer 2028 Alaska program and specifically notes that travelers will be able to extend select trips with cruisetours incorporating Denali and the Alaska Railroad.
